FAQs
How do I choose the right ladder?
Height
While this might seem fairly obvious, a ladder that's too short can make it impossible to get the job done safely. It's best to choose a ladder where you can comfortably reach the necessary height without standing on the top step - ideally two steps below the top for maximum safety.
Look for the number of treads on a ladder or the 'ladder tread'. This refers to the steps or rungs on the ladder where you place your feet while climbing. You usually find steps on step ladders and rungs on extension ladders.
Don't forget to check the closed height of your ladder too, as this refers to the height of the ladder when it is in its stored position. We supply a range of heights and styles for you to choose from for your next project.
Material
The material you choose should depend on what you're using the ladder for. The most important points to consider include:
Fibreglass
Fibreglass ladders tend to be heavier and better suited to heavy-duty work than aluminium. They are non-conductive, making them safe for electrical work.
Aluminium
Aluminium ladders are lightweight and great for general use. However, they conduct electricity so should not be used for electrical work.
Weight capacity
Different ladders have different weight capacities so it's important to check before use. In the UK, ladders are categorised by different ratings that correspond to their maximum safe weight capacity, with the most common standard being EN131. Always check the manufacturers guidelines before use.
Safety features
Common ladder safety features not only reduce the risk of accidents, but can increase efficiency. For example, look for a larger platform at the top for standing, or tool trays near the top to reduce the need carry tools when climbing.
Are step ladders the same as step-ups?
Step ladders and step ups are similar, but aren't quite the same. A step ladder is designed to be freestanding with two sets of legs that fold out to form an A-frame. Step-ups are usually smaller and are a small platform with one or two steps for tasks that don't require as much height.
