How do fuses work?

Fuses work by breaking an electrical circuit when an excessive current flows through it and exceeds the rated capacity of the fuse. This breaks the circuit by stopping current flow, protecting the electrical equipment and wiring from damage caused by overload or short circuits. Once a fuse has blown, it must be replaced with a new one to restore the circuit and ensure future overcurrent protection.

Aside from being one of the cheapest forms of electrical protection, electrical fuses have zero maintenance, are self-protecting and have the ability to interrupt enormous short circuits without producing noise, flame or smoke.

What are the different types of fuses?

What is the difference between a fuse and a circuit breaker?

A fuse is a small wire or metal strip that melts when it encounters an excessive current, interrupting the flow of electricity and protecting the circuit from damage. Once a fuse blows, it needs to be replaced. However, a circuit breaker is an automatic switch that trips and opens the circuit when it detects an overload or short circuit. Unlike fuses, circuit breakers can be reset after tripping, allowing the circuit to continue to function once the fault is resolved.

How often should fuses be checked or replaced?

It is recommended to inspect fuses regularly to ensure they are in good condition and replace them if they show signs of wear or damage. It is also important to consider that frequent fuse-blowing in a particular circuit may indicate an underlying electrical issue that should be addressed by a qualified electrician.
