FAQs
What is fluorescent tube lighting and how does it differ to LED?
Fluorescent tubes are a type of lamp that uses fluorescence to produce light and are commonly found in commercial or industrial settings. Fluorescent tubes use electricity to excite mercury vapour to produce ultraviolet light that causes a phosphor coating inside the tube to glow and emit light. LED lights operate very differently, using semiconductor technology to emit light when an electric current passes through them.
How do fluorescent tubes work?
Fluorescent lighting uses fluorescence to produce light. Within the fluorescent tube is an electrical current which stimulates mercury vapour, this then produces ultraviolet light that causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp.
Are fluorescent tubes being phased out in the UK?
Fluorescent tubes are being phased out in the UK. As of September 2023, fluorescent lamps, including T5 and T8 tubes, are no longer being placed on the market as part of a wider move to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact. However, retailers are able to supply their remaining stock and help customers prepare for the switch to LED.
What are the key features of the fluorescent tubes available?
Our fluorescent tube light bulbs are available in a wide range of sizes including T5, T8 and T9. Within these sizes are different wattages, colours, and lengths to suit any application.
T4
- Compact size
- Ideal for small spaces
- Often used in offices, kitchens and retail for task lighting and displays
T5
- Often installed in series
- Slim design
- Ideal for areas where high light output is required like schools, offices and industrial spaces
T8
- Popular and widely available
- General purpose lighting
- Best suited to larger environments such as supermarkets and hospitals
T9
- Ring-shaped lights for a wide, even spread of light
- Suitable for decorative lighting fixtures
- Often used in commercial and residential ceiling fixtures
Are fluorescent tubes energy efficient?
New fluorescent lighting is no longer placed into retail markets due to its energy efficiency. LED lights are now the ideal replacement, using significantly less electricity to produce the same amount of light as fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent lights are, however, much more energy efficient compared to traditional incandescent bulbs which generate a lot of heat and convert less energy into light.
How should I dispose of my fluorescent tubes?
Fluorescent tubes contain mercury, which can be harmful to both humans and the environment so it is important that fluorescent lighting is disposed of properly. In the UK, all fluorescent light tubes that are no longer in working order should be taken to a local council recycling centre.
